Common infusions
- Antibiotics: Some infections do not respond to oral antibiotics and need more aggressive treatment. Conditions that often require intravenous antibiotics include cellulitis, a bacterial infection in the skin and tissues just beneath the skin, such as strep and staph bacteria; sepsis, an infection in the bloodstream; osteomyelitis, a bone infection; urinary tract infections; and pneumonia.
- Antibodies: Antibodies play an important role in the immune system's ability to fight disease. Reasons for antibody therapy include immunological deficiencies, some cancers, and organ transplantation.
- Blood: Anemia is inadequate hemoglobin, and can be caused by bleeding, vitamin or mineral deficiency, and various diseases. Blood transfusions may be needed in addition to treatment of the underlying cause of the anemia.
- Chemotherapy: Intravenous drugs are used to treat various diseases, especially cancer.
- Hydration and electrolyte replacement: Dehydration can result from prolonged vomiting, diarrhea and diseases including diabetes. Loss of electrolytes often accompanies dehydration. Replacing water and electrolytes can help restore a proper balance while the underlying cause is being treated.
